Code of Conduct

Our goal is to make The 2022 Ecosystem Approach Conference and the Synthesis Working Groups engaging, inclusive and welcoming experiences for all.

Codes of Conduct are increasingly the norm in ensuring individual and collective responsibilities to engaging in a productive, ethical and equitable way. We thank many organizations who have inspired this Code of Conduct. This is a living document, open to thoughtful feedback, to ensure the highest quality experience for all.

Expected Behaviours

  • Treat all participants with kindness, respect and consideration, valuing a diversity of views and opinions (including those you may not share).
  • Communicate openly, with respect for other participants, critiquing ideas rather than individuals.
  • Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants. Alert the Ecosystem Approach Conference Co-Chairs, Steering Committee Members, working group leaders, volunteers or logistical staff if you notice a dangerous situation or someone in distress.
  • Respect the rules and policies of all gathering places, including the meeting venue and hotels.

Encouraged Behaviours

  • Share your pronouns (e.g., she/her/elle/la, they/them, he/him/il/le).
  • Acknowledge the Traditional Territory upon whose land your work is situated (www.native-land.ca).
  • If possible, avoid jargon and acronyms. If they must be used, consider defining/explaining them first!
  • Repeat live questions in the room for the benefit of virtual participants attending online.
  • Offer assistance, feedback or a helping hand if the situation calls for it; offer solutions and suggestions rather than judgements and criticisms.
  • Be cognizant of your footprint: Re-use tumbler/travel mugs provided, bring a feast bundle (reusable food containers, straw, and/or cutlery), and carpool if able.
  • Enjoy breaks, take a walk, and enjoy the campus and riverfront.

Unacceptable Behavior

  • Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form. Use discretion with language and behaviours & be certain respect is communicated. Harassment intended in a joking manner still constitutes unacceptable behavior.
  • Examples of unacceptable behavior include, but are not limited to:
    • Microaggressions, including but not limited to unwelcome comments about age, appearance, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, political affiliation, race, religion, marital status, and career stage
    • Physical or verbal abuse of any participant
    • Inappropriate physical contact
    • Unwanted sexual attention
    • Use of sexual or discriminatory images in public spaces or in presentations
    • Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
    • Harassing photography or recording, including taking photographs or recording of another individual’s oral presentation or poster without the explicit permission of that individual
    • Sustained disruption of talks or other events
    • Bullying behavior
    • Retaliation for reporting unacceptable behavior

Immediate Serious Threat to Public Safety

  • Anyone experiencing or witnessing behavior that constitutes an immediate or serious threat to public safety at any time should contact local law enforcement (by calling 911) and immediately notifying facility security.

Reporting Unacceptable Behavior

  • Please inform the Conference Co-Chairs or logistics team immediately. They will help contact the venue security, enforcement or the relevant assistance  and ensure that the behaviours cease and/or individuals cease participation. Appropriate protocols will be followed and transparent resolutions will be reached in response to the situation at hand.
  • If you have been harassed online, via email or social media, you may send screenshots to the Conference Co-Chairs.
