Through the vision of His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and His successor His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahayan, UAE President and, Ruler of the Abu Dhabi Emirate, Al Ain is no longer a small village, but an impressive, well-planned capital city of Abu Dhabi’s eastern region. Seen from the air it is a vast expanse of green, perhaps the largest in south-eastern Arabia, interspersed with modern roads, hospitals, housing, schools, old forts, the largest zoo in the region, an ice rink, a fun park, the university campus, waving fields of wheat -all an evidence of a judicious use of oil revenues making the desert bloom.

The oasis city of Al Ain looks to the past and the future: to the past as the site of some of the oldest archaeological remains to be found in the country, and to the future as the home of the UAE University, the country’s first seat of higher education. Al Ain lies due east of Abu Dhabi in the lee of the great Hajar Mountains. Little more than 30 years ago, it was ramshackle collection of six small villages. Each had its own falaj (underground irrigation channel) some dating back more than 2,000 years, that brought water to the date groves and rudimentary agriculture on which people depended for their livelihood.
